?What is a german (DFG) graduate school?
!A german graduate school (also called research training group) is a group of research supervisors, doctoral (PhD) students and some post-docs at a university pursuing a coordinated research program. In contrast to a regular german PhD thesis, the thesis work in a graduate school is embedded in a program involving cooperation among different research groups, a general lecture program, seminars, research stays abroad, etc.. This program is supported by the German Research Foundation, DFG (www.dfg.de)

?What are some advantages of a thesis in a graduate school?
!It may be supported financially by a scholarship for 2-3 years. On average, the thesis duration is significantly shorter than a regular PhD thesis. The thesis work is accompanied by interdisciplinary training and international contacts.

?How can I apply for a scholarship?
!You can always fill out the application form which will be forwarded to the relevant thesis advisors. Make sure that your enquiry is well funded, based on a careful study of the supervisor's research field, and that you provide detailed information about yourself.

?What are the minimum requirements for a scholarship?
!You should have obtained an excellent Masters, Diploma, or equivalent degree in Chemistry or Physics from a recognized university not too long ago. In some cases, it may be that you have to prove equivalence of your education to a german Diplom degree by exams here in Goettingen or that you have to pass some lecture or practical courses in the first year of your stay. Obviously, your thesis project and previous expertise should fit into the framework of the graduate school.

?What is the duration of the scholarship?
!Initially, you will be granted a scholarship for 12 months, if you fulfill all criteria. Based on a report on your research progress and your active participation in the program as well as approval by your supervisors, this scholarship can be extended up to two times by another 12 months.

?Do I have to pay the administration fee of 50 Euro per Semester, when I register as a PhD student?
!If you get a scholarship, you can apply for a waiver of this fee at the "Studentensekretariat".

?Was ist ein (DFG-)Graduiertenkolleg?
!Ein Graduiertenkolleg ist eine Gruppe von Dozent(inn)en, Doktorand(inn)en und Postdoktorand(inn)en an einer Universität, die ein koordiniertes Forschungsprogramm durchführt. Im Gegensatz zur "klassischen" Doktorarbeit ist die Doktorarbeit in einem Graduiertenkolleg in ein Programm eingebettet, das Kooperationen zwischen verschiedenen Forschergruppen, ein einführendes Vorlesungsprogramm, Seminare, Auslandsaufenthalte, usw. beinhaltet. Dieses Programm wird von der Deutschen Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG) unterstützt (www.dfg.de)

?Welche Vorteile bietet eine Doktorarbeit im Graduiertenkolleg?
!Sie kann finanziell durch ein 2- bis 3-jähriges Stipendium unterstützt werden. Durchschnittlich dauert sie signifikant weniger lang als eine klassische Doktorarbeit. Die Forschungsarbeit wird durch interdisziplinäre Ausbildungselemente und internationale Kontakte bereichert.

!Sie können jederzeit das Bewerbungsformular ausfüllen, das an die betreffenden Betreuer weitergeleitet wird. Falls gerade kein Stipendium verfügbar ist, gibt es manchmal auch alternative Finanzierungsmöglichkeiten.

?Welches sind die Mindestvoraussetzungen für ein Stipendium?
!Sie sollten in vergleichsweise kurzer Zeit einen sehr guten Diplom- oder Master-Abschluss in Chemie oder Physik erreicht haben. Natürlich sollten Ihre Forschungsinteressen und Qualifikationen zur Thematik des Graduiertenkollegs passen.

?Wie lange läuft das Stipendium?
!Zunächst wird es für 12 Monate bewilligt, wenn alle Kriterien erfüllt sind. Auf der Grundlage eines kurzen Forschungsberichts und Ihrer aktiven Teilnahme am Programm des Graduiertenkollegs kann es mit Zustimmung Ihrer Betreuer bis zu zweimal um weitere 12 Monate verlängert werden.

?Muss ich den Verwaltungskostenbeitrag von 50 Euro pro Semester zahlen, wenn ich mich als Doktorand einschreibe?
!Wenn Sie ein Stipendium haben, können Sie beim Studentensekretariat eine Befreiung von diesem Verwaltungskostenbeitrag beantragen.
